Developmental disabilities board vacancy

There is a vacancy for a Marin County representative on the Developmental Disabilities Area 5 Board. The appointing authority is the Marin County Board of Supervisors. The mission of the board is to ensure that persons with developmental disabilities and their families have the same rights and opportunities as the general population. The board is responsible for advocacy, monitoring, planning and public information in the five-county Bay Area.

Sausalito police in Tip-A-Cop

On Fri., Aug. 27, Sausalito police staff will participate in Tip-A-Cop at Sam?s Anchor Café, 27 Main St., Tiburon. It?s an annual fundraising event organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, in which police officers, dispatchers and officer assistants from different agencies volunteer their time and act as ?celebrity? waiters to raise funds for Marin Special Olympics athletes.

Japanese students visit Sausalito

Thirteen high school students, accompanied by Mayor Aya, other dignitaries and chaperones from Sausalito?s sister city of Sakaide, Japan, will arrive in Sausalito on July 22 to begin a 10-day visit as part of the student exchange between Sausalito and Sakaide. This exchange, which began in 1988, provides students an opportunity to stay with local host families in their homes, learn local customs and participate in educational, cultural and entertainment activities.

The Marin City farmers market is every Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Marin City Gateway Center parking lot. The market runs from June to September.

One cute pup

Barbara Foster and her dog Cassie, won the ?best dressed? award at Sausalito?s first annual Bay to Barkers cute dog contest last April. As a prize, Sausalito artist Lindalee Hulsey (right) painted an acyrlic portrait of Cassie. Hulsey is an in-house artist at the Mark Reuben Gallery on Princess Street.

Residents make Washington U?s dean?s list

Sausalito residents Alison Lee Wilcox and James Miller were named to the dean?s list for the spring 2010 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Wilcox is a graduate of Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, and is enrolled in the university?s college of art in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts. Miller is enrolled in the university?s school of engineering and applied science.

Kids? concert in the park

The Sausalito Lions Club and the Sausalito Parks and Recreation Department are co-sponsoring the annual children?s entertainment concert series at Robin Sweeny Park. On Aug. 7, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., James K brings his mix of folksy family favorites to Robin Sweeny Park. The event is free.

Sausalito Village prepares for October launch

The series of Living Room Chats sponsored in recent months by Sausalito Village will wind up the summer with several gatherings in August and September, prior to the organization?s launch date in October. A new nonprofit group designed to assist Sausalitans in remaining in their own homes as they grow older, Sausalito Village, an affiliate of Marin Village, is using the summer months to educate local residents of all ages about the services that will be available through this program for those who choose to become members or wish to participate as volunteers. Interactive ?Wizard of Oz? performance

Phil Sheridan, local actor, storyteller and librarian, will perform ?The Wizard of Oz? along with members of the audience in eight parts on Mon., Aug. 9. Volunteers will also be asked to do scenes from ?Alice in Wonderland,? ?Casey at the Bat,? ?Who?s on First?? and poems by Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky. Refreshments are served at 6:30 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m.

Special library events for kids

The Summer Reading Challenge has begun. Kids who sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge and read, or are read to, for at least three hours a week, can come into the library for a weekly prize during the month of July. Open to kids 12 and younger. See a librarian at the reference desk to sign up or for more details.
